2011 ROC WEEKEND AT OSWEGO SPEEDWAY NEXT FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
THE WEEKEND OF SPEED WILL HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
BINGHAMTON, NY…The 61st Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend at Oswego Speedway is next
Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 21st through 23rd. This year’s edition of the event will be one of
the greatest with a monster schedule of events on tap over three days. The 61st Modified 200 will
take place on Saturday of the weekend.
The 61st running of the Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend will be a tribute to the legendary
Richie Evans. Evans who will be inducted into the NASCAR Racing Hall of Fame is a three time
winner of the Race of Champions. The Evans family will be on hand throughout the weekend as
Saturday, July 23rd (the day of the RoC 200) would have been Richie Evans 70th birthday.
This year’s schedule of events will make for one of the best weekends of asphalt racing anywhere
in the northeast this race season. On Friday the lightning fast ISMA Winged Super Modifieds will
tackle the 5/8th steel palace oval with a 50 lap event. The record breaking winged supers will see
all of their stars in action including Chris Perley along with invaders Ted Christopher and former
NASCAR Cup and Truck racer Johnny Benson, Jr.
Friday action will also see a regular season point race for the SBS Small Block SuperModifieds as
they compete in a 50 lap event. The Mini Stocks will complete the Friday night card of racing.
On Saturday the 61st running of the Sunoco Race of Champions will take center stage. The 200 lap
event will pay a minimum of $10,000 to the race winner along with over $22,000 in bonus lap money
posted as well. The top ten drivers on lap 100 will each earn $600 bonuses from Toyota and the
leader of lap 68 will earn a $1,000 bonus from Andrew Harpell in memory of Alex Friesen.
Two time race winner Sege Fidanza will make his return to Modified racing for this year’s event. A
stellar field of Modified teams from as far away as North Carolina are anticipated for this year’s 200.
Defending race winner Tony Hirschman will try and add another victory to his impressive career
win list as well.
Joining the Modifieds on Saturday will be the Super Stock 75. Defending race winner Lee
Sharpsteen will try and repeat while representing local speedway Shangri La II. The full fledged
Oswego Speedway Super Modifieds will race in a 61 lap event paying $3,000 to the race winner.
The race will serve as a point race for the track championship so all of the teams will be on hand.
Over 30 Super Modified teams are expected.
Sunday will see the action winding down but certainly not slowing down as the RoC Sportsman
100 will be accompanied by the RoC Late Model 100 and Factory Stock Showdown. Defending
race winners Zane Zeiner (Sportsman) and Bob Weber (Late Models) are both expected to defend
their title.
On Friday there will be a paid open practice beginning at 11:00 a.m. and will run throughout the
day. This will be a great opportunity for teams to shake down their equipment prior to the huge
race weekend. You won’t want to miss this year’s 61st running of the Sunoco Race of Champions
Weekend. We’ve saved the biggest and best for year 61 – don’t miss it.
