A Wild Twin Feature Night At Oswego

Saturday night at Oswego Speedway was a nice for all ages as veterans Dave McKnight and
Bobby Bond picked up wins in the supermodified twin 30;s while Long timer jack Patrick and
rookie driver Dave Latulip won SBS 20 lap main events.

McKnight inherited the lead in the crash filled first supermodified event, after leaders Joey Payne
and Randy Ritskes crashed out of the event.  McKnight cruised ahead through numerous restarts
for the popular win.  Bond took the lead from Stephen Gioia on lap 2 of the nightcap for his third
career win.

Jack Patrick picked up his first win in ten years at Oswego, as he led from green to checkered in
SBS race one.  Freshman driver Dave Latulip fended off the challenges of Barry Kingsley and Tim
Barbeau enroute to the wildly popular win in the nightcap.

Heat race winners Danny Connors and Keith Gilliam led the 12 rows of two plus one to the green
flag, with Gilliam racing out to the point.  Payne followed Gilliam through the opening on the start
for second, with Dave McKnight coming from row four to position four on the first lap.

Payne snaked the lead from Gilliam on lap 2, but the race was slowed as the two-seat
supermodified spun out in turn one, slowing the field.  Payne, Gilliam, Connors, McKnight, David
Gruel, Bond, Ritskes, Craig Rayvals, Ray Graham and Jerry Curran followed when racing.

Caution again quickly flew for a grinding front straightaway accident, as Danny Connors 01 and
Keith Gilliam’s 87 touched coming out of turn four, with the Connors car slamming the outside wall,
riding it high along the straightaway.  Danny was uninjured, but the 01 was severely damaged.

McKnight picked his way by Gilliam on the take off, and was a second behind the 99 up front.
Ritskes began wheeling his 88 through the field, as he was up to fifth by lap 3.  Ritskes kept his
momentum going, shooting by Gruel and Gilliam the next lap, moving up to third place.

Yellow then red flew over the speedway on lap 11, for another hard accident, this one for rookie
Michael Muldoon.  Muldoon’s 20 turned right to the front straightaway outside wall with great force,
sending the car spinning into turn one.  Muldoon was walked to the ambulance, but was uninjured
in the hit.

Lap 12, Ritskes pulled the 88 alongside the McKnight 08 for second in turn four, and began to reel
in the leading 99 car.  The pair raced side by side as they went down the back straight, with Ritskes
looking for the lead.  The 88inched out, but the 99 fought back on the inside, looking for the spot.
As they raced into turn one, the cars locked together, sending both the 88 and 99 into the turn one
foam together, backwards.

Both cars were eliminated for the night, just seconds after racing for the race lead.  McKnight
inherited the lead, with Gruel and Gilliam just behind.  After another couple of caution flag periods,
Gosek's 00 car came to life and began to work his way to the front.  The 00 shot by Bond and
Gilliam on lap 19, and began to reel in the race leaders.  Gosek picked his way by Graham on lap 21,
and Gruel lap 22 for second, and was up to second 3.79 seconds behind leader McKnight.

Gosek needed a caution flag to catch up, but that yellow never came out, with McKnight cruising in
and out of traffic enroute to the victory.  “This is a great win for Gary, Eric, and the Syrell team”, the
happy winners stated.  “It’s not really the kind of race we’d like to win, but we’ll take the win.  The
car was good, but we can still make it go quicker for the second one.”
In the night cap, Stephen Gioia and Andy Noto led the 24-car supermodified parade to the starter
sticks, with Gioia’s 9 shooting to the point.  Bond came from row three to second spot on the initial
lap, chasing the Gioia 9 around the 5/8-mile.  Gruel and McKnight followed through at the get go.

The early lap leader board read 9-25-08-50-90-79-24-87-00-98.  Lap 2, Bond put the hammer down in
turn three, and put the black #25 at the head of the class, as he shot by the Gioia 9.  McKnight
followed suit a couple of laps later, and the dash at the point was on.  Bond’s first lap up front was
timed at 17.48, as he and McKnight put a quick straightaway gap on the third place pack of Gioia,
Gruel, Graham, Brian Sobus, Jerry Curran and Joe Gosek.

Bond turned up the wic as he circled the track at consecutive 17.36 laps, but not losing McKnight
as the 08 stayed in the tire track of the 25.  Gruel picked of Gioia on lap 13 for the last podium spot,
a full straightaway behind the high flying 25 and 08 cars.

Gosek appeared again in the top five, this time on lap 17, as he disposed of Graham on the inside of
the front stretch.  The leaders came into lapped traffic, on lap 21, which they handled with ease.
McKnight saw his chance as the lead duo came into slower traffic a few laps later.  The 08 crept up
to the 25 in the traffic, but once cleared, Bond cruised right back out to a comfortable advantage.

McKnight could never get close enough to challenge, and when the scoreboard read “30”, Bobby
Bond was recorded as the feature winner.  McKnight grabbed a second to go a long with his first
feature win.  Gruel, Gosek and Sobus rounded out the top five.

“ I knew we had to get to the front in a hurry,” Bond said post victory.  “We made a lot of changes
after the first race and the car got quicker.  It was a quick race, and we got out quick, got into a
rhythm, and everything worked out for us tonight.”
Longtime SBS stalwarts Jack Patrick and Mike Bond paced the field, 20 cars strong, to Bruce Lee’s
start of the race.  The inside lane worked better, as Patrick raced his red #9 to the race lead early
on.  The field quickly fell in single file, with Patrick, Bond, Brian Osetek, Dave Latulip, Barry
Kingsley, AJ Bernys, Mark Castiglia, Mike Bruce, Kreig Heroth and Rob Pullen in tow.

A pair of caution flags for minor spins slowed the race, and restacked the field.  No one could get
the momentum up to make the passes to the front. Lap 9, third running, Brian Osetek got a little too
far outside of the race track, and touched the wall, flattening his right rear tire, bringing out the
caution.

The lead duo again raced out, as this one looked to be decided between them.  19.38 and .44 was
the time they recorded under racing conditions.  A couple of restarts, saw the cars race bumper to
bumper, but Patrick was calm and cool through each restart, and never budged an inch.

Bond could never challenge the 9-car enroute to the checkered flag, his first feature win in along
time.  “This feels great, I cant believe it,” Patrick said after crossing under the checkered flag first.
“This is the first time in 10 years that we’ve won.  The car was really good, and we’ll savor this one
a bit before coming out for race two.”
Dave Latulip and Brian Osetek lined up in row one to start the finale, with Latulip getting the bite
down low for the point, once the green flag came out.  Kingsley followed the 27 at the start, as the
inside row took off quicker.

Latulip, Kingsley, Cam Rowe, Pullen and Barbeau raced to the top five at the outset, as
handicapped cars of Mike Bond and Andrew Schartner were deep in the field still, Latulip cruised
up front stopping watches at 20.05 and .02, as he kept the Kingsley and Rowe cars at bay.  Latulip
protected the inside line, as if someone was going to go by the 27, they were going to have to go
around on the high side.

Rowe’s 77-pulled pitside on lap 14, surrendering the 3rd spot.

Five laps to go, the Bernys 24 car spun around bringing out the yellow and setting a shout out to
the finish.  Kingsley, Pullen, Barbeau, Patrick and Bond were waiting in the wings for the rookie to
slip up.

Latulip picked up the pace once racing, and held the 27 to the inside.  Kingsley couldn’t get the
head of steam needed to get by, but drove the youngster clean.  Further back, Bond worked his
way by Patrick, then Pullen, solidly to the top five.  Just laps later, Bond’s 26 came to a rest up in
turn two, ending the fine run for the two time winner this year.

Latulip held his line, stayed low, and kept the 27 at the lead, and cruised under the checkered flag
to a thunderous ovation at the grandstand, Kingsley held on for third, with Barbeau, Patrick and
Heroth filling out the top five.

“I can’t believe this,” the youngster said after realizing a dream  “I’m so speechless.  I’ve only
driven a few races here, and dreamt of this, but this is cool.  I had to keep the car low, and if they
were going to get me, go around me.  But this is awesome, I really am speechless.

News and notes…….29 supermodifieds and 20 SBS cars were pitside.  Danny Connors, Keith
Gilliam and Craig Rayvals won supermodified heat races, with Mike Bond, Brian Osetek, and Jack
Patrick won SBS heats.  Joe Gosek won the supermodified consi.  Otto Sitterly was involved in a
heat race accident in his #7, damaging the car to put it out for the night. Dave Latulip finished the
night with two podium finishes in the SBS class, while Dave McKnight and Dave Gruel had two top
three’s in supermodified competition. There is no racing at Oswego speedway this weekend, as it’s
graduation weekend in Oswego.  Racing resumes on July2, with a regular night of racing, with the
SST cars added. Also on the card are fireworks, and the Hoosier Mama powder puff race.  Gates
open at 4:30pm, with the first race at 6:30pm.
