BINGHAMTON, NY…The 61st Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend scheduled for July 22nd
and 23rd has now gotten even bigger. Race of Champions event owner Andrew Harpell
announced on Monday that the ISMA winged Super Modifieds will now highlight the Friday
portion of the RoC Weekend at Oswego Speedway. This will shuffle the originally scheduled
Friday events to Sunday. The Saturday schedule will remain intact featuring the Sunoco Race of
Champions Modified 200. A complete schedule is posted below. For northeast race fans the
61st RoC Weekend will be a major league event held in the mid-summer. Tickets are now
available.
The Friday ISMA event will be the first of back to back stops in New York State on the weekend
of July 22nd and 23rd. The teams will pack up after the Friday racing at Oswego Speedway and
trek over to Mike Perrotte’s popular Airborne Speedway on Saturday. The ISMA races are
scheduled to be 50 lappers at both facilities.
Joining the ISMA Super Modifieds on Friday at Oswego Speedway for the RoC Weekend will be
the SBS Super Modifieds and Mini Stocks. The SBS teams will compete in an Oswego
Speedway point event. The original Friday schedule which was set to feature the RoC
Sportsman and Late Models will take place on Sunday along with the Factory Stocks. Racing
on Friday evening will get underway at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday racing will get underway at 12
noon. The Saturday schedule remains unchanged.
RoC owner Andrew Harpell commented, “We have always wanted to give our race fans and
teams the biggest and best weekend of racing with the Sunoco Race of Champions at Oswego
Speedway.” He added, “We wanted to try and avoid as many conflicts as possible for the
dedicated support divisions to this event.” “By moving the Sportsman and Late Models to
Sunday it becomes a much better fit for the teams.” “As a race fan myself I couldn’t be more
excited about the addition of the ISMA program to make this the biggest racing weekend of the
year.”
Sunday will still be utilized as a possible rain date for the Modified 200 if needed. With summer
temperatures, any required track drying time can be minimized as needed and the program can
fit in to the Sunday schedule. Of course the hope is that this would not even be a factor.
The 61st running of the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified 200 will take place on the weekend
of July 22, 23 and 24 at the historic Oswego Speedway. The 61st edition will be a tribute to the
memory of the great Richie Evans who won the event in 1973, ’79 and ’80. The 200 lap affair will
once again pay a minimum of $10,000 to the race winner and a minimum of $600 to take the
green. The Modified portion of the weekend will take place on Saturday of the weekend with a
next day (Sunday) rain date.
Joining the RoC Modifieds on Saturday, will be the Oswego Speedway Super Modifieds in a 61
lap battle that will also pay tribute to the memory of Evans. The race will be a point show for the
weekly Oswego Speedway teams and will see an increased purse on the line for the teams. The
Super Stocks will fill out the card on “Super Saturday” of the RoC weekend.
