Birges and Tuey Are Super Saturday Victors
by Gerald Laurie
The SMRA Supermodifieds, and Madera Speedway 360 Supermodifieds rolled into Madera
Speedway on Saturday for the third of six Super Saturday Events at the Central California Race
Track. When it was all over, Jim Birges and David Tuey had become repeat winners for 2009.
Kenny Kinchen(5) was fastest in 360 Supermodified time trials with a lap of 13.531. Lance Jackson
(18) at 13.593, Lance Tatro(72) at 13.627, David Tuey(6) at 13.681, and Kyle Vanderpool at 13.779
rounded out the top five.
The ground pounding SMRA Supermodifieds were paced by A.J. Russell(7) at 12.646, Jeff Russell
(85) at 12.681, Bobby Dalton(36) at 12.748, Troy Regier(98) at 12.836, and Jim Birges(89) at 12.897.
The 360 Supermodified Trophy Dash lined up with David Tuey and Lance Tatro on the front row
and Kenny Kinchen and Lance Jackson rounding out the field. Tatro took the lead from his
outside position on lap one with Tuey, Kinchen, and Jackson in trail. And that was the finishing
order. Tatro took the lap four checkers over Tuey, Kinchen, and Jackson.
The Supermodified Racing Association Dash was paced by Bobby Dalton followed by A.J.
Russell, Jim Birges, and Troy Regier. Once again, the high side proved fast as A.J. led lap one
over Dalton, Regier, and Birges. Laps two and three were the same and then Regier got under
Dalton on the last lap to make the finishing order Russell, Regier, Dalton, and Birges.
The 360 Supermodified 10 lap Heat Race lined up with Willie Northammer and Kyle Vanderpool
on row one followed by David Tuey, Lance Tatro, Lance Jackson, Kenny Kinchen, and Larry
Hinz. The yellow flew on the first lap when Northammer slowed going into turn three and was
contacted by Tuey. Northammer slid up the track catching the rear of Vanderpool and just
missing the nose of Tatro’s car. Tuey was relegated to the back on the restart and Hinz headed
into the pits when the car kicked out of gear. When the heat finally got started Vanderpool led lap
one over Northammer, Jackson, Tatro, and Kinchen. Lap two saw Kinchen move up to third.
Tatro and Tuey both passed Jackson on lap five only to have the yellow fly after contact between
Tatro and Jackson left the 18 car sitting on the front straight with a badly bent left front wheel and
flat tire. On the restart, Kinchen took second with Northammer, Tuey and Tatro following through.
Tuey made the final pass of the race to take third on lap 10. Vanderpool was the winner over
Kinchen, Tuey, Tatro, and Northammer.
The Supermodified Racing Association Supers also ran a ten lap heat. The line-up had Lonnie
Adamson, Jim Birges, Troy Regier, and Bobby Dalton residing in the first two rows. Jeff Russell,
A.J. Russell, and George Greenway rounded out the field. Greenway spun in turn one of lap one
to force a restart. When the green flew and stuck, Birges led over Adamson, Regier, Dalton, and
Jeff Russell. Russell moved to fourth on lap two and Regier took second on lap three. A.J. took
fifth on lap four and Jeff took third on lap six. Adamson came storming back to retake third on lap
eight and that was the race. Birges won over Regier, Adamson, Jeff Russell, and A.J. Russell.
The SMRA and 360 Supermodifieds combined for a fifty lap feature. After second starting Lance
Tatro decided to move to the back of the field after warm-ups, the line up showed Daid Tuey on
the pole followed by Kenny Kinchen, Lance Jackson, Jim Birges, Lonnie Adamson, Bobby
Dalton, Troy Regier, and A.J. Russell. Rounding out the field were Jeff Russell, Kyle Vanderpool,
George Greenway, Lance Tatro, Willie Northammer, and Larry Hinz. On the first lap, Birges
dropped low coming off turn two to take the lead from his second row position. Kinchen, Tuey,
Dalton, and Adamson rounded out the top five. Dalton took third on lap two. By lap three, the
order was Birges, Dalton, Kinchen, Regier, and Tuey. Regier took third and Adamson was fifth on
lap four. After five circuits the order was Birges, Dalton, Regier, Adamson, and A.J. Russell.
Regier took second on lap nine and Russell passed Adamson on lap ten. Lap ten order was
Birges, Regier, Dalton, Russell, and Adamson. Tuey Kinchen, Tatro, Vanderpool and
Northammer were the top 360’s.
The yellow flew on lap eleven when Vanderpool spun on the front stretch. A.J. passed Dalton on
the restart and Greenway then spun in turn three to bring out another yellow. This time Jeff
Russell got the better of Dalton on the restart to move to fifth. A.J took second on lap twenty
Meanwhile the leaders were in heavy traffic as lapping was continuous. On lap twenty five Birges
caught Kinchen and Northammer involved in a major battle of their own. With Birges hung up
behind the lapped cars, A.J. dropped to the bottom on lap twenty six and took the lead coming off
turn two. Birges was still hung up until turn three of lap twenty seven when he split the two and
took off after Russell. At thirty laps. A.J. led over, Birges, Regier, Jeff Russell, and Dalton. The 360
race was led by Tuey over Northammer, Kinchen, Tatro, and Vanderpool.
The yellow flew on lap thirty six when the leader went up in flames and smoke and slid to a stop
near the first turn wall. Tatro got caught up in the oil and spun without contact. The red flew
immediately as a small oil fire was evident on the seven car. After sorting out the mess and firing
off the cars, Birges was again the leader over Regier, Jeff Russell, Dalton and Adamson. Tuey still
was the top 360 over Kinchen, Tatro, Northammer, and Vanderpool.
The last thirteen laps went nonstop with no additional changes at the front. Birges became the
first SMRA repeat winner of 2009 with Regier, J. Russell, Dalton, and Adamson rounding out the
top five. Tuey won his fourth 360 top spot in a row over Tatro, Kinchen, Northammer, and
Vanderpool.
With the next Super Saturday scheduled for July, 18, 2009, Madera Speedway seems to have a
formula which works for the monthly open wheel shows. Awaiting the next big open wheel event,
